                                          THIS IS OUR PATHETIC STORY

We are a body of some unfortunate persons united by the deaths, scars and stigma of a serial kerosene explosion which, in the year, 2001 devastated many towns and villages all over Edo State We have established the Kerosene Victims Welfare Association (KEVA) and its’ subsidiary Women / Child Kerosene Victims Welfare Association (WOKEVA), to seek for adequate restitution and justice in the explosion issue, from the concerned authorities. The explosions emanated from the use of “a highly flammable petroleum product”, which was carelessly certified and piped out to the unsuspecting Edo consuming populace as Kerosene (DPK), by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). As a result, over 350 innocent lives of our persons were lost, and a great number of others survived with life-threatening deformities, injuries and large-scale loss of property. Most pathetically, Victims are mere vulnerable children and women, from the underclass of the Nigerian society.

About five long years after the horrific explosion incidents, most of us (victims) still have festering sores and bizarre disfigurements. We remain destitute; live unhealthy and abnormal lives, while “dying by installments” has become our unfortunate fate.  Where succor is expected, there is an abundant lack of dire medical and social needs. The tragedy has robbed us our humanity, dignity and tremendously reduced our self-esteem and worth. It has hampered our ability to socially interact with our peers and other members of the community. Indeed, many of our child-victims are refused school enrolment because their (child-victims) monstrous looks scare away other pupils.

But, succeed we must, in our sheer determination to live and get the needed reparations,  we are requesting for your kind and prompt support in the following ways.

·           Prevail on NNPC, the Edo State Government and all the concerned authorities;  for humane consideration of the plight of the explosion Victims, and expedite actions, accordingly.
·           Take the steps to reach out to all stakeholders around the world in order to “attain  justice for the oppressed victims”, especially by bringing to the book those responsible for the horrific explosion. To this effect, we are also calling for support for all our Advocacy Program (Litigation, Institutional Lobbying, Media awareness generation etc).
·           Assist with Funding for the general rehabilitation of the Victims.
·           Free Re-constructive Surgery and other medical treatment (especially in overseas) for all the victims in need.
·           Award of scholarships to school-age children who cannot continue their education as a result of the effects of the blaze.
·           Donation of relief materials (clothing, drugs, foods etc.)
